Jodhpur and Jaisalmer: The two quintessential cities of Rajasthan are endowed with different experiences, history, culture and unmatched architecture.
Jodhpur – The Blue City
Quite rightly called the Blue City, Jodhpur is a reflection of the blue painted houses surrounding its Mehrangarh Fort. Founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, the city stands as a marvel in terms of architecture and historical value. The fort is one of the largest forts in India and offers spectacular views along with a museum showcasing the royal past of Rajasthan. Umaid Bhawan Palace, a beautiful building which is partially a heritage hotel till date, stands as another attraction. Sardar Market, located near the Clock Tower, is a bustling market where shoppers can choose from a wide range of spices, clothes and handicrafts, while Jaswant Thada is a beautiful marble monument built in memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. If you want peace away from the rowdy places, Mandore Garden offers a sanctuary with temples and monuments.
Best Time to Visit: October to March are the ideal months for exploring Jodhpur as the weather is not too hot and caters to the sightseeing needs.
Jaisalmer – The Golden City
Jaisalmer, or the Golden City, is located in the heart of the Thar Desert and is known for its golden architecture. The fort, Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Qila), earns respect for its vast history and the shops and lively lanes within the fort, which is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Patwon Ki Haveli, a cluster of five havelis with intricate carvings, and Gadisar Lake, which offers boating among the temples, are among the must-visit places in the city. A camel ride and a view of the setting sun will be a true desert experience.
Best Time to Visit: Like Jodhpur, the best time to visit Jaisalmer is when the heat has lost its intensity, i.e. from October to March.
